My research project aims to study the contamination of rare earth elements (REE), uranium (U), and thorium (Th) in aquatic ecosystems by Canada’s first active mine in the Northwest Territories and the Strange Lake exploration project in Nunavik. More specifically, I am seeking to assess the potential of zooplankton species and an amphipod species to provide information on the contamination levels of these elements and their value for environmental monitoring purposes. With the increasing demand for rare earth elements, it is becoming increasingly urgent to understand the level of contamination in the environment and in freshwater organisms.
